Last night I sat quietly thinking, probably too much again, about life and the decisions we make that will forever keep us looking forward or the dreaded ones that pull us back and hold us down. Ironically, a song by the Rolling Stones that describes what many of us encounter in our lives, You Can’t Always Get What You Want, came on Spotify that I had playing on my computer. I am one who does occasionally look back and thinks about “what ifs.” And, the only reason that I openly admit this is because I know many of you reading this do the same thing. But it never fails that very soon into these thoughts, I begin to literally see all the things and decisions I have made for the best that have brought me to where I am today. I can pinpoint specific times and places that God directed my steps and led me to my current place in life or placed me in the path of someone who would forever change my life. And only by the grace of God do I enjoy the life I have today. I will never know the answer to the “what ifs,” but I do know that God has been with me every step of the way, not telling me what to do, but gently encouraging the right decisions. He will do that for you, but only if you surrender your will to Him. I love how The Message Bible translates James 4:7, “Let God work His will in you.” I could not end with a better prayer for us to start each day.
