I love math. But sometimes I think I have been cursed with the ability to “do numbers” in my head very quickly. Then I remember that it is really a gift that I have been given from the One who dispenses so many different gifts to everyone. Then I also remember that we do not always use the gifts we have. Let’s take math for instance. We rarely think about Jesus as being a mathematician but we find that to be true through many of His teachings. I am immediately reminded of forgiveness. We are often slow to forgive, if we forgive at all. Jesus teaches us that we must forgive others if we expect to receive forgiveness ourselves. So, what does this have to do with math. Simple – seventy times seven. That is the number of times we are told to forgive someone by Jesus in Matthew 18: 21-23: “Then Peter came and said to him, “Lord, if another person sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy times seven.” Jesus says we must become like children to inherit the Kingdom of God. Do you remember having to learn your multiplication tables? Seventy times seven boggles the mind of a child just learning them, yet they accept the truth when they believe in their teacher. And, we must believe in our Teacher. We must forgive. Simple. True. Eternal. Go do the math!
