In the late 1980’s, the group R.E.M. captivated us with a song and the words “It’s the end of the world as we know it.” How often have you had that uneasy, heartbreaking moment that brings you to a place that you just do not understand? Too often, if we are honest with ourselves. The life of a friend is changed forever in the blink of an eye and the sound of a crash. Demons once exorcized return to claim their possession of an unsuspecting soul. Babies hurt for reasons we cannot and will not ever understand. Someone loses hope because life continues to throw relentless curve balls at a time that perception has become blurred. A country turns on itself as division creates the perfect storm of discontent. And so much more. So, what must we do? It is in those times that we must return to our faith in a loving, understanding God Who waits quietly, patiently for us to seek Him. God will protect us if we let Him. For me there are no greater words of comfort in our times of need than Psalm 121:
I lift up my eyes to the hills— from where will my help come?
My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.
He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in
from this time on and forevermore.
Yes, there are calming answers in uncertain times, but we must look in the right place to find them. May you always look to the hills and realize that your true help comes from the LORD.
